Despite The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion being a huge commercial success, it took sequel The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim just 48 hours to sell 3.5 million copies. Within the first month of release it was just half a million copies short of matching Oblivion’s lifetime sales of 6.53 million. Total sales of Skyrim were 12.2 million, as of July 2012.
The latest game in the series took the record from Bethesda’s own Fallout 3 (2008). Bethesda design director Todd Howard was presented with the company’s latest GWR certificate in June 2012 at E3 in Los Angeles.
