Despite the videogame craze of the 1970s, it wasn’t until 1980 that the first licenced basketball game, named NBA Basketball, was released for Mattel's Intellivision, a second-generation console.

NBA Basketball for the Intellivision was released in various editions through different retailers, with later versions supplied through the retailer Sears lacking the NBA endorsement on the cover.

Today, videogames licensed by official sporting organizations are pretty much the standard.
