Before the launch of Blizzard Entertainment’s Battle.net, online gaming services used external interfaces and usually charged for the service. But Battle.net, launched on 30 November 1996 alongside Diablo (Blizzard, 1996), allowed gamers to access Blizzard’s online services, and gave them the ability to join multiplayer games and chat without ever leaving their game.
Battle.net Classic still hosts Diablo today, along with Diablo II, StarCraft (Blizzard, 1998) and several Warcraft titles, while Battle.net 2.0 hosts Diablo III, World of Warcraft (Blizzard, 2004) and StarCraft II (Blizzard, 2012).
