When a catastrophic earthquake and tsunami struck eastern Japan on 11 March 2011, the World of Warcraft community raised a staggering $1.9 million (£1.175 million) to help out. Developer Blizzard Entertainment offered a special in-game feathered pet, the Cenarion Hatchling, which was bought by more than 190,000 generous players to raise money for the Red Cross. The total surpassed the $1.1 million (£691,000) raised by a pet called the Pandaren Monk, created in November 2009.
