Popular myth cites Night Driver (Atari, 1976) as the very first driving game rendered in 3D and from a first-person perspective, but it was in fact preceded – and inspired – by Nürburgring 1. This obscure arcade title was developed in 1976 by Dr Reiner Foerst (Germany), an engineer with expertise in driving simulation. While its visuals, with white bollards marking out a road on a black background, now seem basic, it was a significant milestone in the genre. Dr Foerst’s groundbreaking racer was housed in a stylish, if rather simplistic, cabinet. He developed two follow-ups in 1976, Nürburgring 2 and Nürburgring 3, with each cabinet looking more sophisticated than its predecessor.
