Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (Rockstar, 2004) became the first console game to be rated AO (“Adults Only”) on 20 July 2005, when a sexually charged mini-game called Hot Coffee was found buried within its code. Although Hot Coffee was inaccessible from the main game, its existence on the retail disc provoked North America’s Entertainment Software Ratings Board (ESRB) into upgrading its original “Mature” (M) rating to AO. As a result, the game was banned by several retailers.
