As of 31 March 2021, the most critically acclaimed first-person shooter videogame is a tie between Metroid Prime (Retro Studios, 2002), Perfect Dark (, 2000), and Halo: Combat Evolved (Bungie, 2001), each with a score of 97/100, as verified by Metacritic.com.

Metroid Prime was the first game in the Metroid series to use a first-person perspective, unlike its 2D side-on perspective predecessors. Perfect Dark however is considered a spiritual sequel to Goldeneye 007 (Rare, 1997), and Halo: Combat Evolved is the first in the Halo series, a flagship product of Microsoft's Xbox range.
