The longest-serving President in the world is Omar Bongo (b. 30 December 1935, d. 8 June 2009), who was President of the oil-rich central West African republic of Gabon from 2 December 1967 until his death in office in 2009. He was re-elected regularly unopposed at presidential elections every seven years under a single-party system until 1993, when he was returned with a narrow majority following the restoration of a multi-party system, and again in the subsequent elections of 1998 and 2005.
