On 9 July 2011, Tamas Sors (Hungary) swam the fastest 100 metres butterfly (S9) in history, finishing in a time of 59.23 seconds in Berlin, Germany. Sors, who is also the Paralympic record-holder in this event, competes in a class for swimmers with a physical impairment. Sors's Paralympic record is 59.34 seconds and was set in Beijing, China, on 7 September 2008. He retained his Paralympic title at London 2012, winning the final in 59.54 seconds on 30 August to finish ahead of Matthew Cowdrey (Australia), who was the most decorated man at London 2012 with five golds, two silvers and one bronze.
