For the first time in Paralympic Games history, medals were awarded to the sighted guides of all visually impaired athletes at the 2012 Paralympic Games in London, UK. Previously, only the visually impaired competitor was awarded a medal, but ahead of the 2012 Games the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) ruled that a visually impaired athlete and their guide should be considered a team, with both in contention for the medals.
