Sapiyev was the third Kazakh boxer to win Olympic gold in the welterweight division in successive Olympic Games, following the success of Bakhtiyar Artayev at Athens 2004 and Bakhyt Sarsekbayev at Beijing 2008.
The previous record-holder in this category was Nicolae Linca (Romania, b. 1 January 1929, d. 27 June 2008), who, at the age of 27, won gold in Melbourne, Australia, in 1956.
Sapiyev also won the Val Barker Trophy (named after British heavyweight Val Barker and awarded since Berlin 1936) for being the best pound-for-pound boxer at London 2012. Highlights included a 25-11 round of 16 win against Japan's Yasuhiro Suzuki, which set new marks for the most points scored in an Olympic welterweight contest and the widest margin of victory.
