Sabine Spitz (Germany, b. 27 December 1971) won a silver medal in the Olympic cross-country mountain-biking event at Hadleigh Farm, Essex, UK, on 11 August 2012 at the age of 40 years 228 days. Cross-country cycling became an Olympic sport at Atlanta 1996. Sabine Spitz was the defending Olympic champion after winning the event at Beijing 2008. In the same race, Julie Bresset (France, b. 9 June 1989) took gold to become the youngest winner of an Olympic mountain-biking medal at the age of 23 years 63 days. The race consisted of six laps of the 4.8-km (2.9-mile) Hadleigh Farm course.
