Usain Bolt (Jamaica) retained his Olympic 200 m crown at the Olympic Stadium in London, UK, on 9 August 2012. After setting a new world record of 19.30 seconds at the Beijing National Stadium in China on 20 August 2008, Bolt clocked 19.32 seconds at the Olympic Stadium to complete an unprecedented "double double", having won gold medals in the 100 m and 200 m at successive Games. Three American athletes have come close to retaining the 200 m in Olympic history: Andy Stanfield (gold at Helsinki 1952, silver at Melbourne 1956); Carl Lewis (gold at Los Angeles 1984, silver at Seoul 1988); and Shawn Crawford (gold at Athens 2004, silver at Beijing 2008). In 2008, Bolt became the 25th man to win the Olympic 200 m. Bolt's 200 m win in London made him the first man to win the "double double" at the Olympics - gold medals in the 100 m and 200 m in successive Games. Two women have retained their Olympic 200 m title: Bärbel Wöckel (née Eckert), who represented the GDR (East Germany), was the first to achieve the feat at Montreal 1976 and Moscow 1980, and Jamaican Veronica Campbell triumphed at Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008.
