He won one in 2001 (aged 16 years old), four in 2003, five in 2005, seven in 2007, five in 2009 and four in 2011. His seven-gold haul at the 2007 World Championships (including five world-record times) is a record for a single championships, equalled by Caeleb Dressel in 2017.
Phelps won the 200 m butterfly five times, a record for a single event at the Swimming World Championships.
