The most NASCAR Sprint Cup Series drivers championships won by a driver is seven, achieved by Richard Petty (USA) in 1964, 1967, 1971, 1972, 1974, 1975 and 1979. The feat was equalled by Dale Earnhardt (USA) who won the championship in 1980, 1986, 1987, 1990, 1991, 1993 and 1994. And by Jimmie Johnson (USA) who won the championship from 2006 to 2010 and again in 2013 and 2016.
