The oldest model train set can be found in the Bowes Museum in Barnard Castle, County Durham, UK, and was made for John Pease at an unknown date before 1868.
This is wooden model train set comprising a yellow locomotive, black tender, six coaches in different colours and four rails forming an incline. A wooden box with historical notes inscribed completes the set. It was commissioned to be made (builder and date unknown) by Edward Pease, who was a local banker, land owner and promoter of the Stockton and Darlington Railway, for his eldest son John. Built by George Stephenson the Stockton and Darlington Railway was opened in 1825 and John Pease lived at East Mount Darlington until 1868.
