The most wins of the World Gravy Wrestling Championships is six by Joel Hicks (UK), who has won in the men's category in 2007, 2009, 2011, 2015, 2018 and 2019. The event has been held annually outside the Rose 'n' Bowl pub in Stacksteads, Lancashire, UK, since 2007.
The gravy wrestling competition was established in order to raise funds for the East Lancashire Hospice and competitors' nominated charities.
Combat involves two-minute tussles between amateur wrestlers in a 16,000-litre pool of Lancashire gravy, with the winner of each bout going through to the next round. All competitors must be in fancy dress, as per the official rules, and "serious aggressiveness, roughness or unsportsmanlike conduct" is disallowed.
The six-time winner Joel Hicks – aka "Gandalf the Gravy" – is no stranger to unusual sporting competitions, having competed in or helped to organize clog cobbing (throwing a boot by the toe, heel or tongue), pillow fighting, Santa dashing, egg throwing, bog snorkelling and woolsack racing; he is described by his own charity, Always With A Smile, as "a model, an actor, a photographer, a performer, an athlete, a compere and host, a motivational speaker and a published writer".
