Taylor Swift (USA) took home six statuettes at the 50th American Music Awards (AMAs) on 20 November 2022 – including a record-extending seventh Artist of the Year win since 2009 – to boost her career AMAs haul to 40. Her six wins from six nominations at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, California, USA, padded her lead over Michael Jackson (26 awards) and Whitney Houston (22) as the most decorated artist in the history of the event.
Swift has won Artist of the Year a record seven times (2009, 2011, 2013, 2018–20 and 2022), and she also has an unrivalled number of wins for Favorite Female Pop/Rock Artist (seven, in 2009, 2013 and 2018–22), Favorite Pop/Rock Album (five, in 2015, 2018–19 and 2021–22; respectively, for 1989, reputation, Lover, evermore and Red (Taylor’s Version)) and Favorite Music Video (three, in 2019–20 and 2022; respectively, for “You Need to Calm Down”, “cardigan” and “All Too Well: The Short Film”).
In 2022, a decade after turning her back on her country-music roots following the release of her fourth studio album Red (2012), Swift also collected awards for Favorite Female Country Artist (her seventh category win, and her first since 2013) and Favorite Country Album (Red (Taylor’s Verson) – her fourth award in the category).
Michael Jackson (USA, 1958–2009) won 26 AMAs between 1980 and 2009 and held the overall record for the most prolific winner until Swift claimed six awards in 2019.
In 2008, Swift won her first AMAs trophy, for Favorite Female Country Artist. It was a category she would win for six years in a row (2008–13).
The inaugural AMAs were staged at the Earl Carroll Theatre in New York City on 19 February 1974. The 2022 edition was the landmark 50th ceremony (two events were held in 2003, when the AMAs switched from January to November).
