The earliest World Air Games took place on 15–21 September, 1997, at six different sites in Turkey, including Selcuk. Events included Parachuting, Air Racing, Gliding, Aerobatics, Aeromodelling, Microlight, Hang Gliding, Paragliding and Ballooning. The World Air Games are held every four years, and have since been held in 2001 in Spain, and 2009 in Italy, with the 2005 games cancelled due to organisational difficulties.
