Highest grossing superhero movie

The most successful superhero movie at the international box office is Marvel's The Avengers (USA, 2012), which took $1,519,479,547 (£943,278,000) in its 22 weeks on general release between 4 May and 4 October 2012. The film, directed by Joss Whedon (USA), accounted for 52% of all domestic box-office takings in the USA for the month of May.

The movie secured records for the fastest time to gross $100 million (2 days), $200 million (3 days), $300 million (9 days), $400 million (14 days) and $500 million (23 days), and had the most successful domestic opening weekend of any movie in history, taking $207,438,708 (£128,408,000) from 4,349 cinemas by 6 May 2012, and the most successful domestic week, grossing $270,019,373 (£167,146,000) between its Friday opening and the following Thursday. Known as Avengers Assemble in the UK.
