On 8 May 2012, John Carter (2012) officially became the the biggest box office flop of all-time, when the Walt Disney Company released an earnings statement for the first quarter of 2012 which calculated the loss generated by the film’s poor performance at $161 million (£102.75m). Even when adjusted for inflation, John Carter has still lost more than its nearest rival, Cutthroat Island (1995), even when the figures are adjusted for inflation.

Cutthroat Island is estimated to have left production company Carolco Pictures with a net loss of $104,982,678 (£67,188,914), or $146,947,958 (£90,319,369) adjusting for inflation.
