The MV Fairplayer and MV Javelin, operated by Jumbo Shipping of Rotterdam in the Netherlands, are J-class mega-ships equipped with two Huisman mast cranes each capable of carrying a load of 900 tonnes (992 tons), giving a maximum lifting capacity of 1,800 tonnes (1,984 tons). Each cargo ship has a maximum transport capacity (deadweight tonnage or DWT) of 12,673 tonnes (13,969 tons). To avoid capsizing, these heavy-lift transport vessels must have their ballast tanks flooded while being loaded, and a self-tilting mechanism keeps the ships’ balance when at sea; particularly heavy loads are welded to the deck.
Fairplayer (built in 2008) has a length of 144.8 m (475 ft) and a beam of 26.84 m (88 ft), with a free deck area of 3,100 m2 (33,368 ft2). MV stands for “motor vessel”.
