The Kaman K-225 helicopter was built in 1949 principally for use as a crop duster. In 1951, the reciprocating engine was replaced with a Boeing 502-2 gas turbine (jet) engine to demonstrate the reduced weight, higher power-to-weight ratio - thus allowing greater payloads - and the better reliability and easier maintenance offered by such engines. On 11 December 1951, the modified K-225 became the first helicopter to fly with turbine-powered transmission.
