When
On the 21 October 2011, the first manned flight, lasting one minute and 30 seconds, of an electric multicopter took place in southwest Germany flown by Thomas Senkel, its designer and constructor. Although in looks it appears to owe much to helicopter lineage, the multicopter uses different technology compared to traditional helicopters. Powered by 16 Lithium Ion batteries running electric motors, each driving its own propeller to provide lift, the multicopter is capable of flying for 20 minutes. It weighs 80 kilogrammes.
