The marsupial species that possesses most teeth is the numbat or marsupial anteater Myrmecobius fasciatus of Western Australia, which can have up to 52 teeth, including a unique cheek tooth sited between the premolars and the molars. Despite their number, however, the numbat's teeth are largely non-functional, as it lives almost exclusively upon termites.
