The earliest rhinoceros to have borne horns was Menoceras, which was no bigger than today's wild boar and lived in herds on the grasslands of North America during the early Miocene Epoch, 29–20 million years ago. Only the males possessed horns, which consisted of a small pair borne side by side (rather than one in front of the other) upon the snout.
