The newest species of antelope made known to science is Walter's duiker (Philantomba walteri), which was formally described and named in 2010. This very small West African species – found in Togo, Benin and Nigeria – stands less than 40 centimetres (1 foot 3 inches) at the shoulder. Originally thought to be the same as Maxwell's duiker (Philantomba maxwellii), more recent DNA analyses revealed its status as a species separate from all others.
The species was named after Prof. Walter Verheyen from Belgium's Antwerp University, who first collected a specimen scientifically in 1968 at a bushmeat market in Badou, Togo.
