The largest cat fangs relative to body size were the extraordinarily large canine teeth of Eusmilus, a nimravid or false sabre-tooth cat the size of a leopard. It lived on the plains of western Europe and North America around 37–29 million years ago from the late Eocene to the late Oligocene Epoch. Measuring up to 15 cm long, these enormous dagger-like teeth were almost as long as the cat's entire skull, and when not in use they were housed within bony scabbard-like flanges on its lower jaw.
