The largest teeth used primarily for eating purposes (i.e. excluding tusks used for defence purposes) were those of Livyatan melvillei – a prehistoric species of sperm whale that lived 12–13 million years ago during the Miocene Epoch. Formally described in 2010 from fossils found off Peru, it was named after the biblical sea monster Leviathan and Herman Melville, author of Moby Dick. Its teeth measured up to 36 cm long.
