Belonging to the genus Phrynosoma, the horned lizards of North America are popularly if inaccurately dubbed "horned toads" and number 15 species in total. They are named after the horns on their head, which are true horns, having a bony core. The largest species is the giant or long-spined horned lizard P. asio, which has a total length of up to 20 cm, and lives in desert regions along southern Mexico's Pacific coast. Horned lizards are famous for squirting jets of blood from the corners of their eyes if threatened by potential predators.
