When 21 by Adele (UK, b. Adele Adkins) recorded its 16th non-consecutive week atop the US albums chart on 28 January 2012, it became the longest-running No.1 on the US albums countdown by a UK studio album. Until January 2012, this honour was shared by The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band and Pink Floyd’s The Wall, which both enjoyed 15 consecutive weeks at the summit in 1967 and 1980, respectively. Contenders for this record must be 100% British, so Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours (31 non-consecutive weeks at No.1 in 1977-78) and The Police’s Synchronicity (17 non-consecutive weeks at No.1), bands that included one or more Americans in their line-ups, are excluded.
