The longest continuous operation of a tramway is the St Charles Ave Line in New Orleans USA, which commenced operation in September 1835 and still runs today.
The St Charles Ave line of the New Orleans Regional Transit Authority tramway (street railway) opened for business on 26 September 1835, which (discounting a couple of years' enforced cessation following Hurricane Katrina in 2005) makes it the oldest continuously operating street railway system. In respect of this accomplishment, the line has been granted Historic Landmark status by the City of New Orleans. The achievement is also recognized by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
