Yeti crabs are a specialized genus, Kiwa, of crab-like crustaceans that live at great depths on the ocean floor, and are named after the profuse quantity of hair-like strands called setae covering their thoracic limbs, particularly their long claws. In January 2012, however, scientists made public the discovery in 2010 of a new species that bore this "hair" not only on its legs and claws but also in abundance on the underside of its thorax. Although yet to be scientifically named and described, this new yeti crab has been informally nicknamed the Hasselhoff, after American actor David Hasselhoff - famed for close-up shots of his hairy chest on the TV series Baywatch. The Hasselhoff yeti crab was discovered in great numbers at a depth of approximately 2,500 m, congregating around hydrothermal vents on the floor of the Antarctic's Southern Ocean.
