First held in Tokyo in December 1975 with an estimated 700 participants, the Comic Market or Comiket has grown to be the largest fan event in the world, with an estimated 750,000 people attending the event over three days in summer 2019. It is now held twice a year, in summer and winter, at the Big Sight convention center in Odaiba, Tokyo; its 101st event took place on 30–31 December 2022.

The event is devoted to dōjin goods, ranging from dōjinshi (fan-made comics) to anime, software, video games, figures, jewellery and more. Amateur and professional creators and "circles" (groups) alike apply to participate, but due to space constraints only about 35,000 circles can appear at each event. Organizers estimate that only about 20% of circles will make a profit from their appearance, but for all participants, the most important aspect of the event is sharing their passion with their fellow fans.
