Iquitos, founded in the Peruvian rainforest on the River Amazon in the 1750s, has a population of around 430,000 and is a major port on the Amazon. The only road which leaves Iquitos stops at the small town of Nauta, around 100 km to the South. This makes the city accessible only by air and river.
