Shibam, Yemen, is an early example of vertical urban planning. Its population of around 7,000 live in densely clustered residential mud-brick high-rise buildings, some of which are above 30 m tall and contain up to 12 storeys. The high-rise construction began after Shibam was flooded in 1532–33, with most of the approximately 500 towers built in the sixteenth century.
