Curitiba, the capital of the Brazilian state of Parana, is home to around 1.75 million people. In 1974 it became the first city in the world to implement a bus rapid transit network. Superior to normal bus routes, it uses a combination of practices including dedicated lanes for buses, articulated long buses, and more frequent vehicles, allowing its 2.3 million daily users to commute at speeds more similar to light rail networks than traditional bus networks.
