Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin (1934–1968), the first man in space, allegedly carried a Makarov pistol on his historic Vostok 1 flight on 12 April 1961. The weapon was to be used in self defence in the case of a landing in hostile territory, or amidst dangerous wildlife.
