When the US space shuttle Atlantis launched on 28 February 1990 it carried into orbit a classified payload for the US Department of Defense. Two days later Atlantis deployed what is believed to be the first of America’s MISTY satellites. These spy satellites allegedly use an inflatable outer shell that can be pointed at Earth to greatly reduce their visibility to radar.
