28 January 2012
On 26 January 2012, Norwegian Aleksander Gamme and Australians James Castrission and Justin Jones returned to the Hercules Inlet in Antarctica having skied to the South Pole and back in the first unassisted trip of its kind. The three men travelled without the aid of food drops, snowmobiles, kites or other means of assistance. Having left on 29 October 2011, Aleksander Gamme, in a remarkable display of sportsmanship, waited from 23 to 26 January 2012 at a point just one kilometre from the finish line while Castrission and Jones, who had left on 30 October 2011, caught up with him so that all three men could share the record by crossing the line together.
