Based upon maximum recorded longevity, the shortest-lived species of tapir is also the smallest – the mountain tapir Tapirus pinchaque, which lives at cool, high altitudes in Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. Its maximum recorded longevity is 28.5 years, in comparison with 29.6 years for Baird's tapir T. bairdii, 36.5 for the Malayan tapir T. indicus (the only tapir species existing outside the New World) and 39.6 years for the Brazilian tapir T. terrestris.
