Because all marsupials are born while still in a very early developmental stage, marsupial newborns are much smaller than other newborn mammals. The largest newborn marsupial is that of the red kangaroo (Macropus rufus), but even this only weighs a minute 0.75 g, which is a mere 0.003 per cent of its adult mother's weight. Expressed another way, it would take 36,000 newborn red kangaroos to equal their mother's weight.
