The first person to perform a quadruple lutz in a figure skating competition was Brandon Mroz (USA), at the 2011 Colorado Springs Invitational in Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA, on 16 September 2011. Mroz landed the jump at a US Figure Skating-sanctioned competition, although it was not an International Skating Union (ISU) event. On October 26, 2011, the ISU announced that it confirmed Mroz' lutz on September 16 as the first quad lutz to be performed in a sanctioned competition. Mroz followed this honor by landing the jump again at an ISU-sanctioned competition, NHK Trophy in Sapporo, Japan, on November 12, 2011.
