Largest abandoned factory

- Where

- When

When manufacturing costs do not produce a product at a price people will pay, the consequences are usually failure of the business. The old Packard car factory in Detroit, USA, is a prime example of a once-great manufacturing company that has failed. The 325,160-square-metre (3.5-million-square-foot) factory now stands abandoned on its original 35-acre site. It is difficult to image that this factory once produced 75% of the world's cars. The factory was closed in 1956 and has stood empty ever since.
E-mail response from MA re: why the factory has not been used for something else and why has it stood empty:
Hi Stephen,
Apparently, the land was received by the State of Illinois after the
receivership proceedings and not being in a developing area has never been
sold on for redevelopment. Parts of the factory were rented out for a
while, but now I believe it's all empty and falling into severe disrepair.
Just a consequence of the downturn in industry in the Detroit area.
Cheers
Mark
