In 1889, Rene Panhard and Emile Levassor built a factory to start production of gasoline-powered automobiles. They started business together as partners in a woodworking business, evolving into a coach builder using licenced Benz engine technology. In 1890, their first car rolled out of their workshop using a Daimler engine, the rights to which were held by Edouard Sarazin in France. Panhard-Levassor continued production of cars using pedal-operated clutches, chain transmission and, crucially, a front-mounted engine and radiator. The front-mounted engine driving rear wheels became a standard for the motor industry, and is known as "System Panhard".
