Alpine biomes occur in mountain regions across the world. They begin at an altitude of around 10,000 ft (3,048 m) and continue up to the local snowline. The harsh conditions have led to an absence of any cold-blooded animals, and plants tend to grow close to the ground because of the wind and cold. Alpine animals cope with the cold by hibernating, migrating or growing layers of insulating fat. The Tibetan alpine steppe in China is the largest alpine biome, covering around 875,000 sq km (337,839 sq mi).
