Arctic tundra, which encircles the North Pole along the northern coastlines of Russia and Canada, as well as parts of Greenland, lies north of the vast taiga forests. Tundra is treeless, windy and receives only around 6–10 inches of precipitation annually – mostly as snow. The 48 species of animal found on tundra include polar bears, wolves, bears, rodents, foxes and caribou. Of all the world’s biomes tundra is the youngest, having formed only around 10,000 years ago.
