In April 2011, NEC Laboratories, in Princeton, New Jersey, USA, demonstrated a milestone in data-transmission over fibre-optic cable. NEC demonstrated a data-sending rate of 101.7 terabits per second through 165 kilometres of fibre. This was achieved by sending light from 370 separate lasers of different wavelength outputs into the fibre. Each laser emitted its own waveband of infrared light, containing several polarities, phases and amplitudes to code information. This is equivalent to 250 Bluray discs sent every second; imagine how fast a group of these fibre-optics could eventually be!
