The jaguar Panthera onca is the world's third largest species of cat (exceeded only by the tiger and lion), and is therefore the largest cat in the New World. The largest subspecies of jaguar is the Pantanal jaguar P. o. palustris, native to the Pantanal regions of Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul in Brazil as well as along the Paraguay River into Paraguay, and northeastern Argentina, which weighs more than 135 kg (298 lb) when adult.
