Lion-tiger hybrids have frequently been bred in captivity, and are known as ligers if sired by a lion or tigons if sired by a tiger. The earliest confirmed record of a lion-tiger hybrid is a colour plate of one that was prepared in 1798 by French naturalist Étienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire.
